John Galliano

Juan Carlos Galliano, also known as John Galliano, is a British designer born on November 28, 1960 in Gibraltar, and his family eventually moved to South London when he was six years old. John Galliano’s mother became the catalyst for his creative sensibility; as she took pride on the family’s appearance and would dress him in the most elaborate outfits.

Central Saint Martins

He later on enrolled at the well-known Central Saint Martins college of Art and Design in 1981. He also worked as a dresser for Britain’s National Theatre during his years of studies. His graduation collection in 1984 was inspired by the French Revolution and he titled the collection as “Les Incroyables”:

les incroyables

The collection was well received and was bought by an independent fashion boutique in London, Browns. Not long enough, he established his very own label along with the support of various financial backers; however, went bankrupt in 1990. Galliano continued to struggle financially for years, but eventually met and gained the support of Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley. With their connections, they were able to loan him a mansion for a fashion show, and several top models to work for free. As a result of this collection, he was appointed as the head designer for Givenchy in 1995. Two years later, moved on to Christian Dior.

Up to this day, John Galliano’s designs are well known for its whimsical themes.
